Creating simple yet effective product setups using basic materials like sawhorses and plywood.
Exploring different base options including seamless backdrops, linoleum, and laminate flooring, and deciding when to use a horizon line versus none.
Mastering basic lighting strategies similar to portrait setups, with instruction on lighting backgrounds, incorporating gels, and utilizing overhead softboxes.
Techniques for photographing challenging subjects such as shiny objects.
Introduction to shooting glassware, focusing on managing black and white edge reflections.
Building and using DIY tools like reflectors, gobos, and stander-uppers to control light and shadows.
Post-processing tips, including cleaning up dust and distractions, as well as creatively applying digital backgrounds like window light overlays.
This hands-on session is designed to enhance your technical skills and creativity in product photography, helping you achieve clean, polished, and visually compelling images.
What to bring
Participants are encouraged to bring their cameras and a small product or two to photograph and apply techniques they learn during the workshop. While nor mandatory, it's also nice to have a tripod to steady your camera.
About the presenter
Rick Ciaburri
I began photography in September 1972 by submitting a band camp photo to the Cheshire Herald. While studying elementary education at Southern Connecticut State College, I took on photo assignments. A home darkroom, a secondhand typewriter, and a $75 car helped me get started.
I opened my studio in 1978, focusing on weddings, events, and portraits. The studio had a desk phone, an answering machine, and a wet darkroom.
Since then, my studio has grown into a portrait and commercial studio offering professional headshots, family and senior portraits, event photography, and product photography.
I am a proud member of PPA and CTPPA.
