About This Workshop

The Advanced Studio Lighting Techniques workshop provides photographers with a focused, hands-on exploration of controlled studio lighting. Designed for those who already possess a foundational understanding of photography, the session begins with a concise review of flash photography fundamentals. Participants will then examine the spatial organization of studio lighting through the concept of lighting zones, gaining a clearer framework for distinguishing between key, fill, rim, and background illumination. This contextual approach helps photographers visualize how each light source contributes to the overall composition and mood, moving beyond isolated techniques toward intentional, layered lighting designs. A dedicated segment covers the use of a studio light meter, teaching participants how to take accurate incident and reflected readings and integrate the meter efficiently into their workflow. If you have a light meter, you are encouraged to bring it. The core of the workshop focuses on constructing multi-light setups tailored to creative and experimental objectives. Through hands-on demonstrations, participants explore the effects of various light positions, angles, and modifiers, observing how each choice alters texture, contrast, and dimensionality on the subject. A specialized session addresses the creative application of colored gels to produce vibrant, saturated backgrounds on seamless paper. Participants will experiment with gel placement, intensity, and color combinations to achieve bold, graphic and repeatable results that stand apart from conventional neutral backdrops. Participants should bring their own cameras with fully charged batteries and empty memory cards. This workshop uses Godox strobes and Canon triggers, provided by the instructor. Those who own a Godox trigger are asked to bring them; anyone without a Canon camera or compatible Godox trigger should notify the instructor in advance. A group lunch at a nearby Asian fusion restaurant is included in the schedule, and participants are responsible for their own meal costs. By the end of the day, participants will have developed both the technical understanding and practical skills needed to design and execute sophisticated studio lighting with greater precision and creative control.
