Whether you are an old hand at charitable marketing or want to get started but don’t know how, now’s your chance! PPA Charities, in association with Marathon Press, offers the perfect opportunity to gain new clients and repeat business through a brand-new charitable marketing event. As a PPA member, you can participate in “Celebration of Smiles,” set for April 21, 2012. (Or choose another day that works for you.)

What It Is

Participating photographers will host an event where clients donate a minimum of $24 for a portrait mini session and desk-sized portrait, and 100% of donations go to support Operation Smile. This worldwide children’s medical charity (focusing on facial deformities) can perform a surgery for as little as $240. So, for every 10 sessions a studio photographs during this Celebration of Smiles event, one child will receive the life-changing gift of surgery.

Think how many smiles you could help save by joining in this one-day event! Think how your name recognition and repeat business could grow! (Plus, you might even win the opportunity to document an Operation Smile Mission!)

Get Involved

Register with only a $25 PPA Charities donation, and you’ll receive . . .

· The Celebration of Smiles Marketing Guide that takes you step-by-step through how to market, prepare for and execute your promotion. (You’ll also get predesigned promotional elements and materials for marketing to your clients and prospects.)

· Your studio name and website link on the Celebration of Smiles consumer website: http://celebrationofsmiles.com/

· Weekly “timeline” emails, so you’ll stay on track with marketing and operating your promotion.

Learn more and register at ppacharities.com. Not a PPA member, but want to take part in the Celebration of Smiles? It’s easy to join: ppa.com/joinppa. Don’t forget to include the Source Code CTPPA when applying online or on the paper form (top right hand corner). It is very important that you include this code as CTPPA receives a commission for each “coded” application. This money is added to our speaker budget so we can continue to bring quality programs and speakers to you and your fellow professional photographers in Connecticut. If you would like a coded application, please email Deb Tual at ExecutiveManager@ctppa.com or call 203.321.8300.

If you would like a media kit with more information on the following charity event and a photo of PPA President Don Dickson and his wife, Charlcey, promoting this Celebration of Smiles day (with photo credit of Jamie Hayes), please email Angela Wijesinghe: awijesinghe@ppa.com.

Both these programs will concentrate on the program Lightroom 3. Feel free to bring your laptop to work along with the instructors, however know that electricity is limited. Make sure that your batteries are charged!

Mark Brendel presents “Lightroom: A Beginner’s Course

Join Mark as he helps you demystify the mystery surrounding Lightroom, right out of the box. He will help you with all the lightroom library basic set-ups and development settings. Mark will assist you with any information that you need to start using Lighroom to help you edit more efficiently. Mark has been teaching classes in Photoshop, Lightroom and basic computer courses to many photographers and non-photographers for years. He has been hired by photographers to help streamline their computer workflow and networks. We are excited that Mark will be sharing his expertise with his fellow CTPPA members. Mark invites the attendees of his seminar to ask specific Lightroom questions before the seminar by e-mailing him at m.w.brendel@comcast.net.

Richard Esposito presents “Lightroom: Advanced”

Lightroom’s capabilities surpass what most photographers use it for. Richard Esposito will show features that are mostly unknown, unused, or too advance for the beginning photographer. He’ll explore in Lightroom how to arrange your files, faster culling techniques, import and export presets, using Photoshop Droplets for Lightroom, the capabilities of the print module, as well as settings throughout the program.

These techniques will help maximizing workflow efficiency and improve quality and consistency. Two things that don’t normally go together.

Join us immediately after the programs for our third PRINT COMPETITION of the year. This print competition will be actual prints to help get ready for the Annual Competition coming up in March. So choose your images, register online for print competition and send those images to the lab. WE WANT YOUR PRINTS! Any question for print competition please contact print chair Mark Brendel (yes he’s our speaker too!) at m.w.brendel@comcast.net.

When Registering please indicate which class you will take in the comments section. Thank You!

a longtime member of CPPA and an officer for a number of years.

Old Fellsmere School’s auditorium named for Navy veteran, 86

By Dale Glading

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — When an official proclamation was read at a recent City Council meeting naming the Old Fellsmere School auditorium “The Clarence F. Korker Center for the Performing Arts,” the honored guest was more than a little surprised.

“I was speechless,” said Clarence “Korky” Korker. “I had tears in my eyes.”

However, Vice Mayor Joel Tyson insisted that the honor was well deserved. “Korky made himself the guardian of the building,” Tyson said. “Without him, it would have been beyond repair.”

Korker, 86, was born in New Canaan, Conn. When the Depression hit, his family lost their house and their three butcher shops. As a result, Korker remembers moving “six or seven times” during the 1930s.

“I went from attending private school and riding in Cadillacs to living with my grandmother and some cousins,” Korker said. Eventually, the financial strain caused his parents to divorce and Korker decided to enlist in the Navy at age 17.

“But my parents wouldn’t sign the papers,” Korker said, “so I had to wait another year.”

After attending boot camp in upstate New York, Korker was assigned to the Brooklyn Armed Guard Center. He was being trained as part of a merchant ship gun crew when he came down with a serious case of blood poisoning. That led to a new assignment waiting on tables in the officer’s ward room and eventually, to a stint as a naval photographer.

“I was assigned to photograph Harry S. Truman when he attended the christening of the aircraft carrier Franklin D. Roosevelt,” Korker said. “I also photographed Admiral Nimitz, Mayor LaGuardia and General Eisenhower,” he added.

After the war, Korker returned to Connecticut and opened a photo lab. Aside from a year spent in Texas working in a realty office, photography remained Korker’s profession for the next 40 years.

In 1948, Korker visited Fellsmere with his future wife, Geraldine “Gerry” Hansen, and her parents. After they were married in 1949, the Korkers began an annual tradition of wintering in Fellsmere.

Korker sold his photography business in 1991 and moved to Fellsmere permanently the following year. It wasn’t long before he became involved in saving and restoring the Old Fellsmere School, which was built in 1916 but shuttered in 1982 and deeded to the city.

Scheduled to be torn down, the old school was left to decay instead when demolition estimates exceeded $1 million. Eventually, council member Fran Adams approached Korker about saving the school and he sprang into action.

After raising an initial $2,800 at an Oldtimers Reunion, Korker and three others traveled to Tallahassee to apply for a grant. They returned with $250,000 in state funding and the renovation efforts soon began in earnest.

“We held fish fries, ice cream socials and school tours,” Korker said. The volunteer group had amassed over $600,000 when twin hurricanes hit in 2004.

“We were devastated,” Korker said. “The roof blew off and we had six inches of water in the auditorium.”

However, thanks to a $1.5 million insurance policy and some additional FEMA money, the restoration efforts began anew. Korker brought in a company from Texas to dry out the building and even used free labor from a group of county prisoners.

The newly restored school building now houses the city offices as well as the Boys & Girls Clubs of Indian River County.

“It’s a crown jewel,” said Tyson.

“Because of Korky’s efforts, we are who we are,” added City Manager Jason Nunemaker. “I’m just so proud of the way things turned out.”

The Holiday Social was a big success and everyone had a great time. A big “Thank You” to Art Rich for hosting the event at his Southington studio and for the delicious food he provided. We all appreciate the work he, his wife Jan, and his staff put into making this event so wonderful. In addition to the great food and fun, we celebrated the spirit of giving and the joy of the holidays by participating in the Marines Toys for Tots. The response was so great that the Toys for Tots box was not large enough to fit all of the great toys that everyone donated. Thank you, everyone, for giving so generously to benefit children who might otherwise not receive anything this Christmas.

We had a couple of special visitors stop by our party. We were all happy to see that Santa came and brought well wishes to everyone. We were thrilled that he came to spend time with us given his busy holiday schedule getting ready for the big delivery on “the night before christmas”. To mark the Toys for Tots donation in an official way, LCPL Daniel Tual of the U.S. Marine Corps came by. He is the son of CTPPA members Dan Tual and yours truly and he is home on leave before leaving for his overseas duty station. To say we were proud that he stopped by is an understatement. CTPPA member Liborio Albanese was glad to see a fellow Marine and shared with us photos of when he was in the Marine Corps.

In closing, I would like to wish everyone a happy holiday and best wishes for the coming year, that it may be filled with an abundance of good health and happiness

See the Difference: PPA’s Crusade to Help Consumers See the Light

By PPA Staff

Want to start a spirited conversation with any professional photographer? Just ask them why…when the bridal gown costs a fortune, the senior trip down-payment is looming and the baby needs new shoes…should John and Mary Q. Consumer pay someone to take pictures? After all, Uncle Bob has a really nice camera and his shots from the Grand Canyon were fabulous.

Yet when confronted with the “why a pro” query, many PPA members admit they need a little help articulating the value of a professional photographer and that’s why PPA launched the See the Difference campaign. “The idea grew out of talking to our members,” says David Trust, PPA’s CEO. “In every survey, every one-on-one conversation…somewhere along the way, this lack of the consumer’s understanding of professional photography came up as a concern.”

Working from Both Angles

See the Difference is part direct marketing—online pay-per-click campaigns that drive consumers searching for wedding, senior and family photographers to PPA’s online Find-a-Photographer database—and part marketing tools designed to help members leverage the message in their studios, online and in presentations.

From videos for key target markets to specialty landing pages, as well as a customizable brochure and side-by-side comparison images, the marketing tools focus on a few main points and help consumers actually “see the difference” between an amateur shot and an image created by a professional.

“Some of the side-by-side comparison images say it all,” says Therese Aleman, PPA’s director of marketing and communications. “We took a few basic concepts like lighting, posing and composition and showed how a professional photographer uses his or her skill to change the entire appearance of the image. It’s hard to imagine a bride looking at some of these and not opting for the professional’s work.”

Arming Members with Tools to Win

To date, PPA has allocated over $100,000 to the advertising campaign and plans to continue its online presence in 2012. “A traditional awareness advertising campaign would have been cost-prohibitive, but online advertising helps get the most bang for our buck and has the added benefit of driving interested consumers to the Find-a-Photographer database,” says Aleman. So far, the ads have generated about 79 million impressions and almost 70,000 clicks to the PPA landing pages.

PPA also plans to keep adding to the marketing tools, and Trust believes that will ultimately create the most value around the campaign. “We view the videos, side-by-side images, brochures and landing pages as arrows in a quiver,” Trust explains. “The more ammunition we give our members, the easier it will be for them to help consumers see the difference a professional photographer makes and, in turn, help elevate the whole industry.”

Toys for Tots – Help children in need this holiday season
This holiday season CTPPA is participating in the Marine Corps Toys for Tots campaign to collect new, unwrapped toys for those less fortunate than ourselves, especially impoverished children. The U.S. Marine Corps is the unchallenged leader in looking after America’s needy children at Christmas since 1947. Over the past 10 years, Marines have distributed an average of over 15,000,000 toys annually, and brought the joy of Christmas to an average of more than 6,400,000 less fortunate children each year.

New, unwrapped toys will be collected at the next two CTPPA events – Networking Nights on Wednesday, November 16th (at Crowne Plaza, Cromwell, CT) and the Holiday Social on Saturday, December 3rd (at the studio of Art Rich, Southington).

Our CTPPA family is proud to have an active duty Marine, LCPL Daniel Tual (son of Deborah and Dan Tual), who will attend the Holiday Social to accept your toys. Make a difference for a needy child and help CTPPA donate generously toys to Toys for Tots.

If you have any questions, please call Deborah Tual at 203-321-8300 or email executivemanager@ctppa.com
