It’s not easy to be a professional photographer the past few years.  Angela Carson’s studio has not been immune to our current economic conditions (she is from the Detroit area). However, she has maintained a profitable studio without discounting her portraiture and still delivering the exceptional portraits her client’s deserve.  Angela is coming to Connecticut to share her knowledge and motivation on how everyone can be successful regardless of the economic climate.

Angela believes that everyone possesses the power to reach deep inside themselves to discover their inner strength and succeed.  She will share with you her successful techniques for making money.  Angela will teach you how to use her “non traditional” forms of marketing that are inexpensive and  that you can begin to use immediately to increase your studio’s bottom line.

The program will be in three sections.  In the morning Angela will be discussing getting clients in your door, telephone skills, portrait consultations, pricing, sales and handling price objections. After lunch, Angela will be demonstrating a pre-natal portrait session.  She will be demonstration her lighting style, how she gets proper exposure and custom color balance.  After her portrait demonstration she will also show her portrait workflow.

To wrap the day up Angela will be talking about how she builds relationships with her clients that keep them happy, refering their friends and coming back to her studio again and again.

This program is for photographers both new and old.  Regardless of your photographic specialty this presentation is for anyone interested in improving what they do.  It’s not easy change what you do and Angela asks you to be prepared by having an open mind.   If you are not interested in breaking out of your rut, reaching your full potential as business person, artist and being truly inspired; please don’t come.  You will be encouraged, educated, motivated and amused as you spend an incredible day with Angela Carson.

About Angela

Angela began photographing weddings 25 years ago, while learning portrait photography in her “spare time.”   At the ripe old age of 25, Angela’s opened her first studio.  It was small, but it was a start.  Within the first year of opening her studio, Angela’s client base went from predominantly photographing weddings to almost exclusively photographing children.

Angela’s studio is in Northville, Michigan.  Her studio is located in a 110-year-old Victorian home in downtown Northville.    Angela photographs 125 custom portrait sessions of families, children and high school seniors, annually.  Her innovative and unique portrait styles have made Angela Carson Photography a leading studio specializing in custom designed wall portraiture in the Detroit metropolitan area.

Angela is a frequent lecturer to numerous professional photographic organizations, including The Professional Photographers of America National Conventions; PPA’s Marketing and Management Conventions, The Chicks that Click Conference, Wedding and Portrait Photographers International conventions, and numerous State and local PPA affiliates and most recently at Mystic Seminars.  She has had numerous photographs and articles published in The Rangefinder and The Professional Photographer magazines.  Angela has also had several photographs selected for inclusion in the Professional Photographers of America’s prestigious traveling Loan Collection.

As a young(er), single mother, I post a fair amount of pictures online.  Between Facebook and Twitter it’s safe to say all of my friends and followers know what my son (JT) looks like.  But, at the same time, if you were to walk into my house or see my desk at work, I have a myriad of products with JT’s picture all around me.  What I don’t understand is how anyone would think having a computer image of their kids is enough. But that seems to be the concern of many in our industry.

This conflict of hard copy vs. digital image needs some sort of balance; you know, a little of both “old” and “new” traditions.  I love the ability to sit at my computer and watch a slide show of JT through the years and I also love to see him on the walls in the house or the calendar on my desk.

So I got to thinking that maybe I have an advantage or a little better incite because I work at a professional photo lab and get to see many of these products first hand. I have the ability to physically touch and see a product to determine if I love it or not.  I’m one of those people who needs the full effect.  Think about it.  Nothing does a product justice like the product itself.

The bottom line is that most people are hands on and react to that which is in front of them.  They don’t understand how great something is until they can see it.  With all of the new products on the market today, it is more important than ever to have samples on display to turn your customers from “that sounds nice” to “I have to have that”.

Do parents still want pictures of their kids to decorate their home and offices? My answer is 100% yes… I’m living proof of that!!

Dear Members,

Take action today and register for the 63^rd Annual Connecticut Professional Photographers Association Convention and Print Exhibition. Focus on Success with me and your CTPPA colleagues from Thursday, March 8^th(Pre-Con workshop) till Monday, March 12^th  2012, at the Hartford/Windsor Marriott Airport Hotel.

We start off with the marketing expert, Lawrence Chan from 6:00 till 9:00pm. FYI, there is a $50 fee to attend this pre-convention workshop.

Friday, March 9^th, we have a Business Roundtable Discussion at 10:00am. You can attend the Print competition at 11:00am and watch and focus on how well your prints score.  Friday evening, from 7:00 till 10:00pm,  Matthew Jordan Smith will take us “Beyond Great Pictures”. CTPPA’s famous hospitality room opens at 10:00pm. This is a place to chill, focus and network with your friends. Saturday, March 10^th begins at 9:00am with Tim and Bev Walden. Their program is titled “Separated by Excellence”. They will educate us on how to separate ourselves from the masses and focus on how to run a successful, high end studio. The Walden’s will continue their program after lunch from 1:00 till 3:00pm.   Larry Lourcey will begin his lecture at 3:30pm  and focus on the ins and outs of  Print Competition. The print critique will follow at 5:30pm. The day will end with a kickin’ cowboy party! So bring your cowboy hat and boots and be ready to focus on how to line dance!

Sunday, March 11^th  is our Free Day and begins at 8:30am with a live shoot with Bob Davis, bring your camera and focus with the pro! The Trade Show opens at 11:00 and runs until 3:00pm. That’s when the Annual meeting for all members begins.  Bob continues his program “What the Flash!” from 3:15 till 6:30pm.

Join us at 7:00pm for the Free Awards Reception. Our guest and speaker, Tim Walden happens to be the 2012 President for the Professional Photographers of America (PPA).  He will honor us by performing the induction ceremony of the incoming CTPPA Board members during the evening events.  Monday, March 12^th is the last day of the convention and we have the one and only Kevin Kubota giving his all from 9:00am till 5:00pm, with a lunch break in the middle. Is Lightroom a mystery to you?  Have you loaded the program in your computer and done nothing with it?  Maybe you mastered the basics and now want to learn how Lightroom can help you refine your workflow.  Don’t miss the 1st CTPPA Quarterly meeting of 2012 as CTPPA brings you TWO Complete course on Lightroom workflow.  Meet up with your fellow CTPPA members on Wednesday January 25, 2012 at the Crowne Plaza in Cromwell, CT beginning with registration at 5:30 and dinner at 6:00pm and both seminars start at 7:00pm.

Both these programs will concentrate on the program Lightroom 3.  Feel free to bring your laptop to work along with the instructors, however know that electricity is limited.  Make sure that your batteries are charged!

Mark Brendel presents “Lightroom: A Beginner’s Course

Join Mark as he helps you demystify the mystery surrounding Lightroom, right out of the box.  He will help you with all the lightroom library basic set-ups and development settings.  Mark will assist you with any information that you need to start using Lighroom to help you edit more efficiently.  Mark has been teaching classes in Photoshop, Lightroom and basic computer courses to many photographers and non-photographers for years.  He has been hired by photographers to help streamline their computer workflow and networks.  We are excited that Mark will be sharing his expertise with his fellow CTPPA members.  Mark invites the attendees of his seminar to ask specific Lightroom questions before the seminar by e-mailing him at m.w.brendel@comcast.net.

Richard Esposito presents “Lightroom: Advanced”

Lightroom’s capabilities surpass what most photographers use it for. Richard Esposito will show features that are mostly unknown, unused, or too advance for the beginning photographer. He’ll explore in Lightroom how to arrange your files, faster culling techniques, import and export presets, using Photoshop Droplets for Lightroom, the capabilities of the print module, as well as settings throughout the program.

These techniques will help maximizing workflow efficiency and improve quality and consistency. Two things that don’t normally go together.
