Imaging USA 2012: Big Ideas for Photographers in the Big Easy

The Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans will host an international convention and trade show for professional photographers, January 15-17, 2012.

ATLANTA, November 4, 2011—Professional photographers require education and inspiration to thrive, and Imaging USA has what they need. Registration is open for Imaging USA 2012 (www.ImagingUSA.org), the world’s longest running professional photography conference featuring three full days of intensive artistic and business education January 15-17.

It’s that art and business education combination that helps make Imaging USA such a powerful presence in the photography industry. Not only do attendees find the help they need to improve their photography skills, but they also learn how to make more money with it.

If you are a professional photographer—or want to be—you cannot miss the opportunity to attend Imaging USA. It will do more for your career than any other show,“ adds Don Dickson, president of Professional Photographers of America (PPA). “With so many speakers and programs, it’s amazing what you can learn here in a matter of days.”

Photography classes focus on different specialties and “tricks of the trade” geared towards improving business and photographic skills and use of technologies. Some of the industry’s biggest names appear as instructors, including Joyce Tenneson, Mark Bryant, Ed Pedi, Julieanne Kost and more.

Classes run all day with breaks in between so attendees can visit the Imaging EXPO, a trade show where hundreds of the industry’s leading vendors showcase their products. “It feels as though you have the opportunity to talk to almost everyone in the industry at one show,” notes Dickson.

No description of Imaging USA is complete without a nod to the abundance of photographer-to-photographer networking opportunities. “Imaging USA can feel like a family reunion on top of the education and inspiration,” says Dickson. “I have friends from all over the world that I enjoy visiting with each year at Imaging USA.”

Other notable features of Imaging USA 2012:

  • Annual Photography Exhibit—Open to the Public. One of the world’s largest annual photographic exhibits will be open to the public and there is no charge for admission.
  • Special Events. A full slate of exclusive events featuring everything from award galas to a dance party with Fifty Amp Fuse.
  • Pre-Convention Photography Courses. Imaging USA will offer three days of in-depth pre-convention programming for an additional fee (from classes on the business of photography to hands-on workshops that allow photographers to work with several different pros, one at a time).
  • Specialty classes for sport and event photography. Imaging USA includes an educational track customized for sport and event photographers.
  • Evidence Photographers International Council Education and Certification Class.  For an additional fee, attendees can participate in EPIC courses to learn about forensic and crime scene photography.

Registration is open to all professional photographers and several options are available, including full-convention and one-day passes. A special Join & Go promotion includes a free full-convention registration for new professional active members who join PPA prior to the show. Thinking about joining PPA?  Don’t forget to include the Source Code CTPPA when applying online or on the paper form (top right hand corner).  It is very important that you include this code as CTPPA receives a commission for each “coded” application.
This money is added to our speaker budget so we can continue to bring quality programs and speakers to you and your fellow professional photographers in Connecticut. For more information about Imaging USA or to register for the conference, visit

See the Difference:  PPA’s Crusade to Help Consumers See the Light

By PPA Staff

Want to start a spirited conversation with any professional photographer? Just ask them why…when the bridal gown costs a fortune, the senior trip down-payment is looming and the baby needs new shoes…should John and Mary Q. Consumer pay someone to take pictures? After all, Uncle Bob has a really nice camera and his shots from the Grand Canyon were fabulous.

Yet when confronted with the “why a pro” query, many PPA members admit they need a little help articulating the value of a professional photographer and that’s why PPA launched the See the Difference campaign. “The idea grew out of talking to our members,” says David Trust, PPA’s CEO. “In every survey, every one-on-one conversation…somewhere along the way, this lack of the consumer’s understanding of professional photography came up as a concern.”

Working from Both Angles

See the Difference is part direct marketing—online pay-per-click campaigns that drive consumers searching for wedding, senior and family photographers to PPA’s online Find-a-Photographer database—and part marketing tools designed to help members leverage the message in their studios, online and in presentations.

From videos for key target markets to specialty landing pages, as well as a customizable brochure and side-by-side comparison images, the marketing tools focus on a few main points and help consumers actually “see the difference” between an amateur shot and an image created by a professional.

Some of the side-by-side comparison images say it all,” says Therese Aleman, PPA’s director of marketing and communications. “We took a few basic concepts like lighting, posing and composition and showed how a professional photographer uses his or her skill to change the entire appearance of the image. It’s hard to imagine a bride looking at some of these and not opting for the professional’s work.”

Arming Members with Tools to Win

To date, PPA has allocated over $100,000 to the advertising campaign and plans to continue its online presence in 2012. “A traditional awareness advertising campaign would have been cost-prohibitive, but online advertising helps get the most bang for our buck and has the added benefit of driving interested consumers to the Find-a-Photographer database,” says Aleman. So far, the ads have generated about 79 million impressions and almost 70,000 clicks to the PPA landing pages.

PPA also plans to keep adding to the marketing tools, and Trust believes that will ultimately create the most value around the campaign. “We view the videos, side-by-side images, brochures and landing pages as arrows in a quiver,” Trust explains. “The more ammunition we give our members, the easier it will be for them to help consumers see the difference a professional photographer makes and, in turn, help elevate the whole industry.”

Toys for Tots – Help children in need this holiday season
This holiday season CTPPA is participating in the Marine Corps Toys for Tots campaign to collect new, unwrapped toys for those less fortunate than ourselves, especially impoverished children.  The U.S. Marine Corps is the unchallenged leader in looking after America’s needy children at Christmas since 1947. Over the past 10 years, Marines have distributed an average of over 15,000,000 toys annually, and brought the joy of Christmas to an average of more than 6,400,000 less fortunate children each year.

New, unwrapped toys will be collected at the next two CTPPA events – Networking Nights on Wednesday, November 16th (at Crowne Plaza, Cromwell, CT) and the Holiday Social on Saturday, December 3rd (at the studio of Art Rich, Southington).

Our CTPPA family is proud to have an active duty Marine, LCPL Daniel Tual (son of Deborah and Dan Tual), who will attend the Holiday Social to accept your toys.  Make a difference for a needy child and help CTPPA donate generously toys to Toys for Tots.

Notes from the Scott and Adina Hayne

Scott and Adina Hayne’s Seminar “Getting out of the Ordinary” was one of the most informative meetings that I have attended.  This wonderful couple are not only sweet, but have so much information that they are willing to share.  They started their business in 2008 and was voted SPA’s Artist of the year in 2009.  The lecture started off with a slideshow of images and then went into a brief description of how they started their family run business, which is made up of Scott and Adina as well as their two sons, Hunter and Austin.  Scott went into a whole description of how he works with off camera lighting and went through several different images and described where the lights were and what equipment they used.  Several of their vendors will be mentioned at the end of this article and if you attended the seminar, their vendors will give you a discount for mentioning the Hayne’s name.

At lunch we celebrated Scott’s birthday with a chocolate cake and the association sang a joyful “Happy Birthday to You”.  Thank you to the Hartford/Windsor Marriott Airport for the great food buffet.  Everyone said it was great!

The second half started off as Adina described how to keep your studio so that the clients will “Want” to come back.  We had a great lighting demonstration first using a beauty dish and 2 strip lights and then another lighting demonstration featuring the ring light from Brian at myringlight.com.   Adina spoke about marketing and social media during the last half of the seminar and indicated that  your studio should have separate websites for your product lines if they warrant it.  Example is that if you have a large high school senior following and a high volume wedding business, you would want two websites, because the high school seniors won’t want to look through your weddings.  You MUST have a blog and a website and utilize facebook and twitter.  Scott touched on the importance of SEO and your blog posts.  Key things that need to be done is to edit your page name (SLOG), Edit your image name and add keywords.  Adina made sure to touch on what to Blog on and she stated that you have to blog on a consistent basis and you have to create an inspiration notebook, so that when you get “Blog Block” you can open your notebook to see what you can write about.

When it comes to facebook, it seems that the standard advice that all speakers are giving today is to NOT make any images viral until the sale is complete.  When your images are posted to facebook or if you give away a digital file, then the value is not there anymore for the customer to make the sale.   Scott ended the seminar with a presentation on lightroom and the presets that he created.  Scott and Adina we just want to thank you for sharing all your information.  They have so much information to give and are so willing to share.

Speaking of Sharing…..Some CTPPA members went home with some awesome prizes!  Jackie Joachim, Nancy Sarra-Allen, and Dick Napoletano went home with great products from H & H Color Lab!  Jerome Braga went home with the stylish Shoot Sac!  Elizabeth Taylor and Steven Smith went home with an R-Strap, Connie Kessel, Jen Braga and Jan Sexson all went home with free music from Triple Scoop!  Thank you to Brian from MyRingLight.com for donating his ring light to CTPPA to be auctioned off, with all the proceeds going to our scholarhip fund.  Tammy Gillespie is now the proud owner of this awesome ring light!!

The vendors that the Hayne’s LOVE are the following:  We would like to send a great big thank you to H & H Color Lab and RadioPopper for sponsoring the Hayne’s seminar today.  Visit the Hayne’s website for some great discount code to these great partners:  http://www.norulesworkshop.com/#/partners/

“Be Extraordinary”

Are You Ordinary or Extraordinary?

Dear Members,

There are many elements to a successful business. Having Positively Outrageous Service is one of them. I had the great fortune of hearing a lecture by T. Scott Gross who wrote the book about extraordinary customer service. His philosophy is “Create compelling word of mouth”. Here is a list of my top 10 ideas from his book that will make your client say “WOW”!

  1. Remember the client even when they are not buying.
  2. Give something free of cost and do it randomly.
  3. Become a quality and service fanatic.
  4. Demonstrate respect for the client’s time.
  5. Say you are sorry for the slightest slip from standard.
  6. Know your clients name.
  7. Entertain your client.
  8. Support causes clients hold important.
  9. Say “YES” and be positive.
  10. Be a good listener.

My relationships with my clients are lasting.  We become friends and my goal is to have these people become clients for life.   How do you want your clients to remember you?

Being a member of Connecticut Professional Photographers Association can help you get out of the ordinary and become extraordinary. Please join me for “Getting Out of the Ordinary” with Scott and Adina Hayne on Monday, October 17th.  Attending the Fall All Day Seminar will open your eyes to an extraordinary experience.

After the program there will be a digital competition so send your images NOW (to print chair, Mark Brendel at m.w.brendel@comcast.net), have them judged and viewed by your CTPPA friends.

It’s another way to become EXTRAORDINARY!!

Celebrate the fall season,

Lynn

Scott and Adina Hayne present “Getting Out of the Ordinary”

Join CTPPA at the Hartford/Windsor Marriott on Monday October 17, 2011 for this exciting all day seminar!

We are Scott & Adina Hayne and we have a story to tell.  In a changing economy we have found that people are hungry for a success story.  Our seminars provide us an avenue to inspire and motivate other photographers to think in new ways.

Since starting our business in 2008 we have seen our business explode from 4 weddings to 37 in just 12 months!  Our portrait side has seen the same type of business growth including being recognized as the “Senior Portrait Artist of the Year”.  Sometimes we look back and wonder how we got here so fast but the wondering has ended!  Our seminars put into concrete, the lessons learned and strategies that worked (and didn’t)!  Many factors have contributed to this amazing ride and our workshops will explain the factors that go into our photography, business success and networking.

Photography is, of course the core of our business.  My style is defined by moody off-camera lighting, wide panoramics and images that WOW.  Surrounding myself with the right equipment and trusting my eye is key to my success. There is no better feeling than knowing that what I captured came from my heart and my eye and that I can duplicate it ….because it’s me.

Adina keeps the wheels turning on the business end with constant networking and marketing on many levels.  Her keen awareness of the latest trends in social networking have enabled our images to be published in many feature articles and our client base to grow by leaps and bounds.  Knowing how and where to market ourselves online has enabled us to reach an international audience in an amazingly short time.  Her strategies will open your eyes to many innovative avenues of reaching massive amounts of people in a targeted fashion.

A wedding, portrait and senior business…..that will blow your socks off and break a few rules – that’s Scott & Adina’s ‘Getting Out of the Ordinary” Seminar!  Scott and Adina are sponsored by H & H Color Lab.

beltramis, hayne, philips

Don’t forget to get your digital files ready for our second print competition of the year!  This will be a digital competition and all files need to be e-mailed to our print chair, Mark Brendel before the Seminar.  Remember, you can’t win if you don’t play!  For more information on Print Competition or to volunteer to help out with Print Competition please contact Print Chair, Mark Brendel.  You can reach him by e-mail at m.w.brendel@comcast.netClick Here for more information on the Digital Print Competitions

A New Beginning

Dear members and friends of CTPPA,
When the position of Executive Manager was open and available a few months ago, I thought long      and hard whether or not if I was willing and able to fulfill the responsibilities successfully and after  careful consideration I finally submitted my application.  I am happy to say that I decided to once again serve the board and members of CTPPA and thankfully the Board of Directors voted to accept my application and appoint me Executive Manager.  Among the many responsibilities is to take care of dues payments and so many of you have received notices that your dues are up for renewal.  Please know that your dues payment keeps your membership current so you will continue to receive all of the benefits CTPPA offers without interuption.  Also, know that we now have rolling membership so if you know someone who is interested in joining, please encourage them to apply at any time during the year – the sooner the better. Everyone receives 12 months of programs and events.  You will find the application and information on joining by going to ctppa.com.

It is my pleasure to serve all of you as Executive Manager and I will strive to support board members and serve the membership so your membership experience is the best it can possibly be.  I urge you to get more involved with CTPPA by lettting the board know your comments, compliments, criticisms and complaints or volunteer for the many committees that help make all of our events and programs possible.  You may direct all of your correspondance to me and I will let the appropriate person know.  The board is working hard to bring quality programs, educational opportunities, and networking events to you.  Your support is greatly appreciated.

CTPPA is a membership organization and run by members so please take ownership of it; go to every event that is offered; and get more involved.

Yours truly,
Deborah Tual
CTPPA Executive Manager

Celebrate Life!

Dear Members,

My friend and a long time CTPPA member, Gerri Karamesinis passed away peacefully at her home on August 6th,  her 65th Birthday. Her battle with Cancer was long and courageous.

Gerri was an amazing woman. Her passion and zest for life was evident in every breath she took. Even right till the   end, completing 17 quilts in one year while undergoing chemotherapy treatments.  Gerri was a tremendous advocate for CTPPA. Whenever she met a new photographer she worked hard to recruit them. Telling them it would be the best investment in their business and their personal life. She was always active in helping people become a better photographer. She taught them to love the craft and profession as much as she did. She was tireless and always ready to work.  She will be deeply missed and remains in our hearts forever. May you rest in peace, my friend…..

As one life ends a new one begins…

My first grandchild, Gianna Lynn, was born on May 20th.   I love being a Grammy! We as professional photographers have a gift. Our gift is to capture and create memories through our imagery. We can capture something ordinary and make it extraordinary. The birth of a baby is not an ordinary event, so I didn’t have to make these next few images extraordinary, they already are!

Please join your friends and colleagues on September 21, 2011 at the Crowne Plaza Cromwell, 100 Berlin Road, Cromwell, CT, for another extraordinary dinner meeting. Chris and Pat Beltrami “are passionate about everything…each other, their family and especially photography”  Don’t miss out!

Celebrate Life!

Chris and Pat Beltrami, present “A Passion for Photographic Art” September 21, 2011

Chris Beltrami, (M.Photog, Cr., ASP-Fellow) and Pat Beltrami, (M.Photog, Cr., ASP-Fellow) present “A Passion for Photographic Art”

Not doing anything Wednesday September 21, 2011?  Well now you are!  If you haven’t ever seen Pat and Chris Beltrami present a program, then you are missing out.   This power couple from Vermont have been speaking all over the country and internationally for years.  They are passionate about everything…each other, their family and especially photography.

Although Chris says that the Beltrami style is “absence of”, it may be more accurate to say “always changing”.

From portraiture to impressionistic art to environmental studies to b&w street shots, the Beltramis will share their seasons of photographic style.

Experience their evolution and then feel the wonder and the magic of – Al’ Istante…the snapshot … the unplanned … the decisive moment.

This will be an emotionally charged program that is designed to renew your passion for creative photography … and for life itself .

“In the midst of enjoying each season of photographic style, I have always been aware of an inevitable revelation for more.    God’s surprise packages come so quickly.”    —-Chris Beltrami

The Beltramis will also share:

High School Senior Art Book —How to add $200 to most of your Senior sales.

Great Sales – Overlooking the Obvious

Pat will share one great sales suggestion that will increase your average sale by 25 to 100%.

It is the most important thing that we have done for our studio in the past 4 years.

10 Photoshop Tips—some really great tips – you won’t want to leave home without them.

In 1974,  Chris left a Cost Accounting position with IBM, Kingston, NY in order to begin the studio photography business.    With vision and hard work, Chris and Pat were able to open 5 successful studio locations.   They still operate 2 of the locations and have released the other 3 to new award winning ownership.

Beltrami Studios generates over 1 million dollars in annual sales so, in addition to artistic instruction and motivation, Beltrami lectures provide creative and engaging ideas for marketing and selling.

Editorial

Shalom, sayonara, so long, farewell, auf wiedersehen,

adieu, adieu, adieu to you and you and you

After 32 years I have decided to hang up my Spotlight pen and let the next generation take over. For the most part I have enjoyed editing this publication. Sure, it got frustrating when I was ready to publish and I was still waiting on an article from the featured speaker – or some additional meat to the speaker’s article to make his/her program sound inviting. President’s Messages were sometimes hard to come by – again, I sometimes had to beg, bribe, cajole, threaten…to get a Message. I wish all presidents had been like Grace Cribbins – she wasn’t only on time – she was usually early.

There have been many publications over the past 32 years, but the Spotlight was my first, and now my last. In between my first and last issue of this publication I edited the PPANE Newsletter for 19 years, the Maine, Massachusetts and the American Society of Photographers (ASP) newsletters for about five years each. I was the editor of LENS magazine, published by CPQ Professional Imaging in Cleveland, Tennessee for seven years and I have been a contributing writer for Rangefinder magazine for eight years.

Over the years, I have also edited and published newsletters for a number of photography studios in New England as well as editing a policy book for a South Carolina office of a national insurance company, which may serve as the prototype for the entire company.

While it can be less time consuming to put together a publication now than when I started (typing, proof-reading copy, cutting and pasting with scissors and tape, proof-reading the blue line), it still takes a good eye for layout and to have a command of the English language and grammar. One must know the difference between there, their and they’re; you’re and your; its and it’s…. One should know when to use a comma, semi-colon or a period – know when to hold them and know when to fold them. Every article in every issue of every publication that I have been involved with has been read and reread and edited by yours truly.

With that thought in mind, I decided to let it fly with this final issue. The articles that appear in this issue are as they were e-mailed to me. This is my one-and-only unedited newsletter.

I’m not sure what is going to happen to the Connecticut Spotlight. It could morph into a blog or just disappear completely. In my years as editor, I always tried to present information that would or should be interesting to photographers. I did not limit my scope to CTPPA, but included information about PPANE, PPA and WPPI. If one of the New England states, New York or New Jersey was willing to publish information about our events, I was only too happy to publish information about theirs. Connecticut is a short drive to most of these locations and I wanted to be sure you (and you and you and you) had the opportunity to attend programs and learn beyond the Connecticut borders. I always published the names, classification and cities of the new applicants; Shutter Clicks is where we were able to read about our colleagues and their families and their accomplishments. If a CTPPA member wrote an article, I was only too happy to publish it – I never said “no”.

Lynn talks about my editorials in her President’s Message. Sometimes I was preachy; sometimes I felt something had to be said about a given topic. A President’s Message should always be upbeat and cheerleaderesque, but an editorial is an opinion. You don’t have to agree with it – you don’t even have to read it. However, I did try to bring whatever I wrote about back to photography in the end – but not this time.

With my feelings about what a newsletter should be, I was a taken aback at a CTPPA board meeting when someone said that he does not read the Spotlight – that there is too much information. It is sad when all we want is sound-bite information. I realize this is happening everywhere, which is why newspapers are failing and people prefer to get their news from the internet. We are experiencing a dumbing down of Americans (and probably human-kind). Future issues of the Spotlight, if there are future issues, may be nothing more than a blog.

It was also voted to do away with the convention book as we know it. There may be a convention “book” and membership directory in 2012, but it will be on a CD or flash drive, something that I don’t find convenient. I’m old; I like to open a convention book to find names, telephone numbers and addresses. Not only is it easier, it is faster.

Best wishes to whoever succeeds me and heed these words – use a dictionary and never trust spell-check.

Adieuingly,

The Connecticut Spotlight
