Lighting is easily the most important aspect of photography. I would even go as far as saying that lighting is photography: It is even in the word itself; “Photography” is greek for “Light Drawing”, or “drawing with light”. Without light, you cannot take photos.  It is perfectly possible to take amazing photographs with a very simple camera – as long as the lighting is good.  The opposite is true as well: If you are taking photos in a situation where the lighting is truly appalling, having the fanciest, most expensive camera in the world isn’t going to help you capture the photographs you want.

Become a seeker of light!  The most important thing we have to do is to learn how to “see the light”.

A lot of things will affect what the effects of a light source are, and how your photos are affected by said source. The brightness (or ‘intensity’) of the light source plays an important role, but, as we will explore in depth in the next chapter, is a lot less important than you might think.

The color of light is essential – and some of the biggest challenges you’ll meet in photography are the issues that arise when you start mixing different light sources. Sunlight, for example, has a drastically different color from the light that comes from your flash, the light that comes from car headlights, or the light in your house. While it can be incredibly difficult to get your photos to look “right”, light sources of different colors offer an opportunity too. With the right mixture of types and colors of light, you can achieve some beautiful creative effects that will make your photos really ‘pop’.

During the class we are going to through the evolution of light using small Speedlites, direct flash, bounce flash, multiple wireless remote flash, and creating studio quality light anywhere, anytime.

Bio:

I am proud to be a member of the CANON family and the Canon Explorers of Light, a program created by Canon for the purpose of educating photographers. This is an elite group of 60 of the USA’s best EOS photographers united in their love and passion for photographic excellence.  I am also a proud member of the APPLE Aperture Advisory Board.  I have written a book Lights, Camera, Capture Creative, Lighting Techniques for Digital Photographers.  I am proud to say it’s also an App for the iPad and was the number one selling App in photography on the Apple App tore.

I’m not a newcomer to the photographic industry. I’ve been a professional photographer for over 25 years.  It was obvious to me at an early age that being a photographer was what I wanted to do with my life!

My passion for photography began back in high school when I became the editor of my newspaper.  I then went on to Columbia College and was named College Photographer of the Year.  With this came a full time job at a daily newspaper in Chicago and then on to a full time position for 14 years at the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper.

My cameras have always been like a passport into history.  I am continually honored when doors open and people invite me in to document their life.  While at the paper, I had covered countless amazing events, such as presidential elections, Michael Jordan’s entire career with the Chicago Bulls, many religious faiths rituals and ceremonies, and tent revivals. I’ve traveled around the world to places such as El Salvador, Taiwan, Lithuania, Romania, Moldova and Kenya, Tanzania for human interest stories. I’ve even had  the pleasure of seeing the power of photography first hand and it’s ability to move people.

I have since moved on from the newspaper industry, my main focus is wedding photography and documentary projects for non profits.  Today, I have the privilege of photographing the most important events in my client’s lives and it couldn’t be more happy to have this honor.  Photography… It’s what I’m passionate about.

Kevin Kubota

Lightflow: A Workflow System for Photographic Lighting

Lighting is arguably the most important aspect of a good photograph, yet many photographers cringe at the thought of having to use artificial light – especially under time constraints and critical situations (like when the wedding party is staring at you!) Using simple, reliable tools and tested techniques, we can create beautiful light anywhere – with minimal setup and complication. Learn the essential tools of location lighting including:

• Balancing flash and ambient light exposures and color temperatures in the same image.

• Which lighting tools are worth their weight in your camera bag.

• Pimping Your Speedlight. How to get the most from a common, yet often misunderstood (and underestimated) lighting tool.

• How do they do that? Lighting tricks that are easier than you think.

• How to stop being afraid of the dark. Use shadows to add depth, mood, and interest.

Kevin Kubota brings over 20 years of studio and location lighting expertise from his wedding, portrait, and commercial work. His latest book: “Kevin Kubota’s Lighting Notebook: 101 Lighting Styles and Setups for Digital Photographers” is a best-seller and award-winning reference for the serious photographer.

Lightspeed Workflow:  A Digital Workflow System for Photographers

One of the biggest complaints from photographers is the time spent on image post-processing. Workflow bottlenecks keep you from doing things you really love – like shooting more and playing with your family! Many photographers don’t even know they have a slow system until the discover a better way. This workflow seminar will overview the entire system taught to thousands of photographers – saving them countless hours in post-production. The system is based on Adobe Lightroom and will also cover integration with Photoshop. Topics to be covered include:

• Building Core Strength: Time management tips for the busy photographer

• Organization tips for future success

• Lightroom workflow and the shortcuts and tips that make it awesome!

• Start to finish: from import to final posting on social media. Beginning with the end in mind.

Kevin Kubota is the author of “The Digital Photography Bootcamp™” book and workshop under the same name. The workshop has been running successfully for over 20 seasons and is considered by many to be the de facto standard in complete studio training. His workflow DVD, “RAW Workflow for Lightroom” has helped optimize the studios for thousands of photographers.
